Meeting the needs from a growing city

Aarhus’ population is increasing with approximately 5,000 new citizens every year. Securing Aarhus to continue growing, Aarhus Vand plans to construct a new wastewater treatment and resource plant that safeguards the bay into which the treated wastewater is discharged.

Designed to meet tomorrow’s demands, Aarhus ReWater will deliver outlet water quality of the highest standard, helping to ensure the long-term ecological resilience of Aarhus Bay and supporting a sustainable aquatic environment for generations to come.

The existing WWTPs in Marselisborg, Åby og Viby have proven to be too small to meet the future demands and the current locations do not allow the necessary expansion. Thus, Aarhus ReWater is a necessary.

Making room for urban development

The new wastewater treatment plant, Aarhus ReWater, will be located near the current Marselisborg WWTP . At the interface between the city and the sea it will strengthen Aarhus’ connection to its waterfront with walking paths and vantage points while creating a vibrant new urban space.

Our goal is to utilise the specific potential of the site and the central location to make sure that the new plant fit into the local surroundings. At the same time, our goal is for the plant to contribute positively to the development of both Tangkrogen locally and in terms of liveability in Aarhus in general by obtaining a multi-functionality in design and land use.

A healthy water environment

The new plant will improve wastewater treatment through enhanced treatment for phosphorus and nitrogen. Furthermore, a fourth treatment stage will be implemented to meet upcoming EU-requirements. Thus, we will establish treatment for medical residues and other environmentally harmful substances.

This will help to ensure the long-term ecological resilience of Aarhus Bay and support a sustainable aquatic environment for generations to come.

More than wastewater

Our ambition is to establish not only a wastewater treatment plant but a ‘resource plant’. Aarhus ReWater will produce energy from the wastewater. Resources that today are classified as waste, can be used for green energy and heating. Furthermore, it is also a goal to utilise wastewater to produce nutrients, and new biobased materials.

Developing the new WWTP into a future resource plant, we have chosen to name the new plant Aarhus ReWater. The “Re” referring to the words “resources”, “recycle”, “reuse” and “rethink” allowing for a broader mind-set on how to manage.

A Living lab at Aarhus ReWater

Our ambition is to construct a plant where new knowlege and solutions can be developed, tested and demonstrated. That way be can continously improve Aarhus ReWater.

Technology and requirements are constantly changing. Therefore, our job is not to build a finished plant, but to build a “learning” plant that will be able to meet the existing demands while still being adaptable and making us wiser. Thus, a living lab will be included in Aarhus ReWater - a place for developing and testing new and optimised treatment processes.
